What's this button?

You may have noticed that web pages are being invaded by little orange, blue, red, or other-colored buttons with letters like "XML", "RSS", "ATOM", "Info Bite", etc. on them and wondered what they were. If you've click on one, most likely what you saw probably didn't help answer the question. What are these buttons, and why doesn't clicking them take you to anthing resembling a web page?

These buttons are links to files referred to by such names as "feeds", "newsfeeds", "syndication feeds", and "digests" (that's our favorite term). Digest files usually contain a list of the items most recently posted on a website (but are used for lots of other purposes too). They usually aren't designed to show up nicely in web browers (though some to look good in some modern browsers).

Instead, they are used with programs referred to by such names as "feed readers", "newsfeed readers", "aggregators", etc. Click here for a list of feed readers (some free, some not).

Instead of clicking on the buttons in your browser, subscribe to the digest by either dragging the button to your feed reader or copying the link location and pasting it into the appropriate place in you feed reader.

Why would you want to use a feed reader? For answers to that and other questions about RSS (which applies equally to other digest formats), read here.
