What does "chordata" mean?
Chordata is the name of the animal phylum that contains mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and most fish (among others).

We chose the name of a phylum, and the name Chordata in particular, for this service for a number of reasons:
  • The service categorizes newsfeeds heirarchically by their content (similar to how living things are categorized by family, phylum, class, genus, species, etc.).
  • The service is a directory of newsfeeds of various types (RSS, Atom, etc.)
  • Chordata is prounounced like "core data"--a phrase that is descriptive of many newsfeeds.
  • Chordata is much easier to spell and pronounce than many of the other phylum, class and family names we looked at.
  • The phylum chordata contains the fish we've named our newsfeed tools after (carp, jawfish, grouper...with more to come!).

What does "phylum" mean?
A phylum is one of the levels of classifications of living things. The general hierarchy (leaving out a few steps like subclasses) is: Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species

Can I display newsfeeds on my website?
There are two answers to this question: legal and technical:

Is it legal: Some sites allow their feeds to be viewed in feed readers, but not to be published on other sites, and some restrict which sites may publish their feeds. Still others allow their feeds to be published on any site. This directory lists all of these categories of feeds, so you'll have to check the newsfeed (it may contain a copyright or other statement covering this question) or the site that publishes it to be certain.

Is it possible: There are a number of solutions for displaying newsfeeds on websites. For example, we offer CaRP, a PHP script which will do it. For those who can't use PHP, we have Jawfish, which will work with any website.

Why do I have to log in to rate newsfeeds?
A few reasons:
  1. To reduce "ballot box stuffing"--one account one vote (please only create one account)
  2. So that you can change your vote later if you want to
  3. ...more reasons to come as features are added. You'll see!

Why are some of the letters in links on this site enclosed in [square brackets]?
The letter in square brackets (or in some cases, underlined) is an "access key". If your web browser supports access keys, you can quickly jump to the link or form field by pressing alt-[access key] (on Windows) or control-[access key] (on Macintosh). Note that "c" is the access key for "Chordata" (ie. a link back to the homepage), although it is not displayed underlined or in brackets.

What are the numbers in square brackets next to the category names?
They are the number of newsfeeds in that category and any subcategories.
